In insect societies, the reproductive division of labor implies that reproduction is carried out by a limited number of individuals (reproductives), whereas the other colony members forego their own reproduction. However, in subterranean termites, this stable organization can be modified by the high developmental plasticity of individuals, where each colony member (under certain conditions) have the potential to become new reproductives.

The aim of my post-docoral project is to identify how and why some non-reproductive individuals develop into fertil ones in the subterranean termites Reticulitermes flavipes. To that purpose, we explored several mechanisms involved in social interactions and especially caste regulation like chemical and vibratory communication.
