Contenu

Scotland in the Victorian Age changed significantly and irreversibly: the agricultural transformations caused rural, industrial and imperial migrations, and urban growth too. Industrialists found new markets in the Empire, the exchanges with the North of Ireland were consolidated. All these transformations gave the Scots more freedom and greater opportunities to achieve their potential. Anyhow social, political, cultural tensions remained: the cause of home rule grew and affected Scots’ sense of belonging and Britishness. Social tensions increased at that time too and labour became more and more organized. The violence of the labour movement proved to be significant at times.
